The story of how companies can come together to strengthen communities – Urban Ag News

By Chris Higgins, President of Hort Americas

During the very early months of the pandemic, our associates at AppHarvest got here to us with a problem. They needed to know if Hort Americas may assist them supply lights that have been:

1. Made within the USA.

2. Made within the Appalachian area.

3. Made at a price equal or lower than the competitors provides.

In May 2020, this was a BIG ask.  Most companies weren’t desirous about new initiatives, particularly something that may add value or require main funding. Due to the pandemic, most U.S.-based companies have been extra targeted on making use of for PPP or reducing prices as safety from an unsure future and shrinking gross sales.

Thankfully, all of us had a lot of time at our desk. So we positioned just a few cellphone calls to see what we may make occur. Our first name was to GE present, a Daintree firm (when it comes to lighting, they’re at all times our first name).  Truth be informed, we anticipated a fast “no” and presumably a extra emphatic “hell no.”  Instead what we heard was, “well (long pause), maybe (long pause) let us make some phone calls.”

This then led to a loopy 12 months. During this time,  we assessed and recognized wants whereas uncovering what was potential. To say that any of the events knew precisely what they have been agreeing to can be utterly deceptive. Everyone was merely saying sure to an incredible alternative.

“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.”

Richard Branson
