Techniques For Improving Your Time Management

Time management is a key skill when it comes to getting your work and chores done in an efficient way. However, it’s not a skill that comes naturally to everyone. With a few tips, though, you can perfect the art of using the time to your benefit.

Make sure to keep yourself organized. Disorganization can get in the way of time management, as you spend time trying to remember what tasks you need to complete and looking for supplies you may need. Staying organized can mean making lists to visually see what needs to be accomplished, or making sure your workspace is always neat and orderly.

Use your downtime well. If you have a long drive to work or you walk to your local supermarket, use that time to run through goals you want to accomplish for the day. During your workout, you can be thinking about ways to attack a project you have coming up. These are big blocks of time that you can use to your advantage to keep you on task during other parts of your day.

Remember to take breaks regularly. When you get in the zone on a particular task it can be easy to forget to take a moment for yourself, but this is a key part of effective time management. Take five minutes to get some fresh air if you’re stuck in an office. Or use 15-minute breaks to grab some water or a cup of coffee, which will keep you moving later.

Concentrate on the task at hand. Getting distracted is one major way your time can be wasted. Block out emails, the phone, or loud noises to pay attention just to the task at hand. If you have trouble concentrating, look for a workspace that has no outside distractions. Or, play soft, ambient music that blocks out any distracting noises you’ve been noticing. Reward yourself. At the end of the day, if you’ve achieved your goals in a timely manner, give yourself a pat on the back. This can mean a tasty treat or a relaxing bath with a favorite book. Rewarding yourself will keep you motivated to focus on time management in the future.

Whatever techniques you use, remember not to procrastinate. Even if you can do just a bit of the job you need to get done, do it. Putting the job off altogether will just make it harder to get started again.
