In hydroponic systems, crops are grown directly in the mineral solution with roots or inert medium such as gravel or perlite with roots.

Aquaponics combines the rearing of aquatic animals (such as fish) with the growth of hydroponic crops. In aquaponic systems, the water containing the waste material from the aquaculture fish is used to grow hydroponic plants. After the water is used by plants, the water is re-circulated in the system so that it can be reused by fish.
