Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani gets bail in ‘assault’ case in Assam | India News

New Delhi: An area court docket in Assam’s Barpeta district on Friday (April 29) granted bail to Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in the case of alleged assault on a policewoman. 

Anghsuman Bora, lawyer of Jignesh Mevani informed ANI that Mevani is prone to be launched on April 30 owing to some formalities. 

The Gujarat MLA was remanded to 5 days of police custody by Barpeta’s chief judicial Justice of the Peace on April 26 for “voluntarily inflicting damage”, “legal pressure to discourage public servant from discharge of obligation” and “pressure on a lady cop meaning to outrage her modesty”.

Mevani was first arrested on April 20 and granted bail later in connection along with his tweets on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Gujarat chief was arrested by an Assam police crew from Palanpur city in Gujarat. Soon after his bail in the tweets case, on Monday (April 25) he was rearrested on totally different costs, together with “outraging the modesty of a girl police officer”. 

The Gujarat legislator was arrested for his tweets on the PM following a criticism filed in opposition to him by Assam BJP chief Arup Kumar Dey, in search of motion in opposition to Mevani below sections 120B (legal conspiracy), part 153(A) (selling enmity between two communities), 295(A), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to impress breach of peace), and sections of the IT Act.

 The Assam state Congress unit had protested in opposition to the arrest of Mevani, an unbiased MLA, who had prolonged his help to the grand previous get together in September 2019.
