Oklahoma Tribal Engagement Partners, or OKTEP, collaborates with sovereign tribal nations and tribal organizations all through Oklahoma to tailor SNAP-Ed programming to fulfill the wants of Native households. Over time, focus teams have expressed what issues to Natives: the should be “actual.” As organizations look to develop culturally related programming, we should step again and hearken to what issues to households. We are in an period of change, an period the place we’re brazenly referred to as to handle inequities in our programming and practices. The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health referred to as vitamin and well being professionals to prioritize the position of vitamin and meals safety in total well being and guarantee packages deal with the vitamin wants of all folks.

OKTEP seems to be to households to determine what’s “actual” to them, specializing in their vitamin and well being considerations. We have realized from Native households that Westernized approaches haven’t all the time acknowledged the significance of conventional information, methods, and practices. Parents and elders shared the necessity for youth training to elevate up conventional values and information. OKTEP places cultural relevance on the forefront by growing supplies and packages that align with conventional practices. In coordination with tribal nations and companions, we work to include conventional methods of being lively, uplift and embody conventional meals as substances, and incorporate tribal language. Our collaborative efforts are constructed upon relationships cultivated over a few years.

Eagle Adventure and Diabetes is Not Our Destiny reside packages honoring Native traditions. We prioritize Native information and work with a Native owned advertising and marketing firm to share tales of well being that encourage power and well being for a lifetime. Though we nonetheless have work to do and modifications to make, our aim is to make sure packages are getting “actual.”
